Trent T. Haywood, M.D., J.D., Appointed to the Healthmap Solutions Board of Directors

Nationally Recognized Healthcare Executive and Former Blue Cross Blue Shield Association Chief Medical Officer Joins Healthmap Solutions Board at a Time of Rapid Growth and Expansion at the Company

OCTOBER 15, 2020, TAMPA, FL—Healthmap Solutions (Healthmap), a growing specialty Population Health Management (PHM) company with an industry-leading Kidney Health Management (KHM) program, today announced the appointment of Trent T. Haywood, M.D., J.D., to the company’s Board of Directors. Dr. Haywood is a leading healthcare executive who has been at the forefront of the healthcare industry’s transformation to value-based care and whose expertise in developing and leading best practices to improve quality, drive clinical innovation, and eliminate social determinant of health barriers to care has earned him industry-wide recognition. He joins the Healthmap Board of Directors at a time of unprecedented growth in the kidney health management sector and the company.

Dr. Haywood is a board-certified internal medicine physician who brings over 20 years of healthcare management experience to the Healthmap Board. He is the founder of KNOWALITY, LLC, a venture services firm dedicated to accelerating the market adoption of innovative healthcare services and products that improve population health. Most recently, he served as the Chief Medical Officer of the Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) Association, where he was responsible for guiding medical policy and clinical programs for the Association’s 36 member health plans. He also served as President of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Institute, a benefit corporation focused on addressing the social determinants of health for BCBS plans. Dr. Haywood has led national efforts to implement value-based healthcare as Chief Medical Officer at Vizient (formerly VHA, Inc.), and Deputy Chief Medical Officer for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS).

“Trent knows firsthand the challenges facing health plans as they grapple with the transition to value-based care, particularly when it comes to managing populations with complex, chronic conditions, such as kidney disease,” said Eric Reimer, Chief Executive Officer at Healthmap. “He is a caring and compassionate physician who understands that clinically proven treatments produce the intended care and financial results only if continuity of care is established and maintained. His leadership in the area of eliminating socio-economic obstacles to care is one of the many reasons we are excited to have him on the Healthmap Board.”

Dr. Haywood joins the Healthmap Solutions Board at a pivotal moment in the kidney health management sector. In the U.S. more than 37 million people live with chronic kidney disease, and close to 800,000 have end-stage renal disease, the more serious disease state which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive. The number of people living with kidney disease grows annually, a situation that may be exacerbated by the number of COVID-19 survivors who develop kidney disease. Addressing racial disparities in healthcare, particularly pronounced when it comes to kidney disease, has become an important priority in the healthcare industry. Recent regulatory changes are upending the treatment status quo, spurring innovation and, in the case of the 21st Century Cures Act, opening the door for thousands of kidney patients to access more affordable care and a wider array of benefits through coverage under a Medicare Advantage plan.

“When it comes to chronic conditions like kidney disease, it is not only the clinical management of the condition that is important, but all of the social determinant of health factors that can lead to suboptimal care that must be addressed,” said Dr. Haywood. “I am thrilled to bring my experience with community-based approaches to improving care and outcomes to the important work underway at Healthmap Solutions. It is all about helping those living with kidney disease to remain as healthy as possible and preventing those most at-risk from developing kidney disease in the first place.”

Healthmap has stepped into a leadership role within this new market dynamic. On October 1, 2020, the company announced the expansion of its executive leadership team with the appointment of Eric Reimer as Chief Executive Officer. In May, the company entered into an agreement with a leading national health plan to provide KHM services for the company’s Medicare Advantage and Commercial health plan members living with kidney disease in Florida. A month later, Healthmap partnered with a large Blues health plan in the western U.S. to provide KHM services. Healthmap is in late-stage contracting with several leading health plans to implement its KHM services, amounting to tens of thousands of patients across the country. Currently, the company supports the health of 4 million lives and manages $1 billion in medical spend.
