HEALTHMAP SOLUTIONS APPOINTS RICHARD POPIEL, M.D., MBA TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Kidney Population Health Management Leader Attracts More Nationally Recognized Healthcare Expertise
NOVEMBER 14, 2019, TAMPA, FL— Healthmap Solutions, a rapidly growing national Kidney Population Health Management (KHM) company, announced today the appointment of Richard Popiel, M.D., MBA to its Board of Directors. A national leader and innovator in leading patient-centric healthcare organizations, Dr. Popiel is now part of a Board that enjoys a broad spectrum of healthcare expertise that spans payor, provider, technology, and finance sectors.
Dr. Popiel is a board-certified internal medicine physician and brings over 26 years of healthcare management experience to the Healthmap Solutions Board. He most recently retired from Cambia Health Solutions, a Portland-based healthcare solutions company working to create a person-focused and economically sustainable healthcare system, where he served as the company’s Executive Vice President and Corporate Chief Medical Officer for over six years. He is currently a Senior Advisor at McKinsey & Company.
Prior to joining Cambia Dr. Popiel served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Horizon Healthcare Innovations, a Horizon BlueCross BlueShield of New Jersey company, Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for Horizon BlueCross BlueShield of New Jersey and Vice President and Senior Medical Director for The Permanente Company, a part of the Kaiser family.
“Dr. Popiel understands first-hand the challenges health plans face as they look to manage populations and help individuals with complex, chronic conditions, such as Chronic Kidney Disease,” said Steve Shulman, Co-Chair of the Board of Directors of Healthmap Solutions. “His insights and experience will be invaluable assets to our Board as we continue to accelerate our growth and deliver customized Kidney Health Management solutions that reduce costs for health plans and at-risk providers while improving quality and outcomes for the patients they serve.”
Dr. Popiel began his career in internal medicine after graduating from The George Washington University Medical School. Throughout his career, he used his medical and business experience to help individuals navigate the complexities of our healthcare system while ensuring that the cost of care remains affordable to healthcare consumers. Caring for individuals and their families has been a lifelong passion for Dr. Popiel, one that continues today with his service on the Boards/Advisory Boards of several healthcare organizations including Medecision, BioiQ, Tabula Rasa Healthcare, and Pager, trailblazers in using technology and advanced analytics to seamlessly connect patients to the right care at the right time in the right place. He also serves on the Board of The George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates, one of the largest medical groups in the District of Columbia.
“Dr. Popiel’s belief in the power of big data, artificial intelligence and patient-centered care to transform how healthcare is accessed and delivered to patients aligns perfectly with the mission and business model of our organization,” said Joe Vattamattam, chief executive officer of Healthmap Solutions and member of the Board. “He has distinguished himself as a caring, compassionate and dedicated physician, someone who is committed to the wellbeing of patients and their access to a healthcare system that provides the services they need to live healthier lives. It is a privilege to have him on our Board of Directors.”
Dr. Popiel joins the Healthmap Solutions Board of Directors at a watershed moment in the KHM sector. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has posed a significant challenge to the providers who care for the patients, health plans that cover the costs, and patients who are afflicted with it. In the United States, one in nine people have CKD and remain unaware of it until they need more aggressive treatment. More than 726,000 Americans have irreversible kidney failure or End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and need a kidney transplant or dialysis while they wait for a kidney transplant, which can take upwards of three to seven years. What’s more, early detection remains the most meaningful way of stemming the growth rate of chronic kidney disease, keeping patients healthy, and lowering the cost of care.
“I am thrilled to join the Healthmap Solutions Board at this critical moment in the Kidney Health Management sector and to have the opportunity to work with a trailblazing organization such as Healthmap Solutions,” Dr. Popiel said. “Data-driven solutions and compassionate, high-quality care are the linchpins to solving the strategic healthcare challenges we are facing, specifically as they relate to population health management and KHM in particular. There is a real opportunity to bring meaningful change to the treatment and care of patients living with CKD and those who are at risk of being diagnosed. As a medical professional, nothing is more gratifying than keeping people healthy and living their lives to the fullest."
