It’s just a fact. Compared to other industrial nations, the cost of End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) care in the U.S. is much higher. It’s easy to see why. While other countries have largely shifted to home dialysis whenever medically appropriate and a higher rate of kidney transplantation, the U.S. has remained centered on in-facility dialysis with relatively few transplants. As a result, kidney patients in this country pay more for ESRD treatment than anyone else – without enjoying commensurately better outcomes.
Where it has been employed, home dialysis has proven to be considerably more popular with ESRD patients, being more comfortable, convenient, and less time-consuming than a trip to a dialysis facility. Home dialysis also eliminates a major social determinant of health for an increasingly elderly population where just getting to an in-center dialysis facility can be a significant obstacle to care. In addition, given its long-term nature, home dialysis is much more cost-effective for payers and providers.
Recognizing this, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) developed the ESRD Treatment Choices (ETC) payment model, to incentivize home dialysis and other options as part of their push from fee-for-service to fee-for-value care.
How can your organization make this essential transition? Reach out to Healthmap Solutions.
Our innovative Kidney Health Management program is designed to match ESRD patients to the appropriate care, including home dialysis. The program’s management tools support close collaboration among primary care providers, specialists, and patients, enabling us to customize dialysis plans to include site of service, dialysis modality, and start date. This planning and optimization also extend to kidney transplant evaluation and support.
